Many immigrants from Europe had never seen tropical fruit until they arrived at Ellis Island where they were given fruit when it was in season. Ice cream and donuts were also handed out to extend a warm welcome. This young Irish girl has found a quiet place to sit as she peels her first orange.

Once an immigrant arrived at Ellis Island they had to go through the long processing lines to determine if they met the criteria of entering the United States. This girl is in the main hall of the Administration Building on Ellis Island and is waiting to hear her name called to find whether she has been accepted.

Eli is the niece of an artist friend of mine. She is one of the most delightful youngsters I’ve ever met. A smile, sparkle to her eye, and curly red hair; perfect.

These two were strangers from different countries just minutes before finding a quiet place to sit and enjoy the oranges given to them on Ellis Island. Many Europeans had never seen oranges or bananas before coming to America. One looks with anticipation and hope to her future and the other is secure that she faithfully will have a promising future.
